Wimbledon CommonHuge, wild common on the edge of London.

For those who really want to shake off every last vestige of the city and head for an endearing village location, Wimbledon Common is ideal. This huge area of open heath and woodland spreads out over two miles (1140 acres) and is riddled with rambling paths and bridleways. Most of the common has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation, which makes it a great place to well and truly get back to nature. Stag beetles, in particular, thrive in the bogs and well-established woods. Near the middle of the common a windmill, dating from 1817, marks the spot where Baden-Powell wrote part of 'Scouting for Boys'. It’s now a small museum. Some nice old pubs are vdotted around the edge of the common, while Wimbledon Village with its quaint pubs, thriving delicatessens, antique shops and independent boutiques is just a short walk away. This is a great space for a relaxed stroll or a gentle horse-ride but most importantly Wimbledon Common is synonymous with the home of The Wombles - author Elizabeth Beresford's fictional litter collecting characters. See if you can spot any...

Best for:
Beetles, bridleways, windmills and wombles.

Did you know?
A school football team who played on the common in the 19th century went on to become Wimbledon F.C.
