The Royal Opera: Hansel and GretelHumperdinck's operatic adaptation of the Grimm Brother's fairy tale about two children who get lost in an enchanted forest comes to the Royal Opera House this December. The tale of Hansel and Gretel, who can't resist a bite of the house made of cake, is told through catchy folksongs and late-Romantic orchestration. Staged by director and designer Antony McDonald, this new production of the dark but enchanting fairytale is sung in German with English surtitles and is suitable for children aged 6 and above. Closely associated with Christmas, Richard Strauss conducted the opera's first performance in Weimar 125 years ago, on 23rd December 1893.

About Royal Opera House

This impressive building in the heart of Covent Garden has been playing host to major stars of the classical music world since 1858. The third theatre to be located on this site, today's Royal Opera House is the result of a reconstruction in the 1990s (although the main auditorium is part of the original building).
