The ConvertBlack Panther star and Tony-nominated writer Danai Gurira - also known for her role as Michonne in The Walking Dead - brings her 2012 play, The Convert, to the Young Vic in 2018. Forming part of Kwame Kwei-Armah's inaugural season as artistic director, the play explores colonialism and Catholicism and their impact on black identity. Set in 1896 in what is modern day Zimbabwe and Jekesai, it tells the story of a young woman fleeing a forced marriage only to find herself working for a devout Catholic priest who takes the opportunity to mould his new convert. Gurira's fellow Black Panther star Letitia Wright along with Paapa Essiedu and Ivanno Jeremiah make up the cast.

 

About The Young Vic

Knocked together out of breeze blocks for a minimal budget in 1970, Lawrence Olivier's experimental theatre was intended to last for five years, and provide an inspiration for the new generation of performers. But this was an experiment that worked and, years later, the Young Vic remains south London's premier venue for the contemporary, the shocking, the controversial, and the bizarre.
