The Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court at Somerset House is always a favourite with kids. These jets of water are especially popular when they provide a welcome cooling splash amid the scorching summer sun. The jets are timed to go spurt upwards in a sequenced pattern to make a stunning and visually mesmerising display. And, when evening falls, the water is floodlit adding colourful lights to the water projections. The Somerset House courtyard makes a grand entrance to the main house which frequently houses exhibitions and has its own cafe and restaurant, The Admiralty. In summer, a temporary stage is erected within the courtyard and a popular programme of live music runs (with the water fountains turned off) - Hot Chip, Lily Allen and Grace Jones have all played here. As a rough guide, the fountains are usually on from 10am to 11pm daily but as they are turned off for special events, it's best to check (by calling 020 7845 4600) beforehand if you're going there especially to see them.
