Reflections: Van Eyck and the Pre-RaphaelitesThis year, the National Gallery brings together Van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait with paintings from the Tate collection and loans from other museums for the first time. Reflections: Van Eyck and the Pre-Raphaelites explores how the Arnolfini Portrait was one of the inspirations used by the Pre-Raphaelites to forge a radical new style of painting. Acquired by the National Gallery in 1842, Van Eyck's painting informed their belief in empirical observation, ideas about draughtsmanship, colour and technique, as well as the ways in which objects in a picture could carry symbolic meaning. This exhibition will show how the likes of Sir John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti were influenced by the painting in their work.

About National Gallery

The National Gallery dominates London's Trafalgar Square with its neo-classical columns and portico designed by William Wilkins adjoining the square on its east side where it has been pedestrianised. Some of the finest examples of European art, ranging from 1260 to 1900, are included among the 2,300 paintings filling its halls and rooms. More about National Gallery
