Pearl Jam, who play this one-off gig at The O2 to celebrate the reissuing of their break-through debut Ten, are one of rock's survivors. Eddie Vedder's Seattle grunge outfit burst onto the scene with 1991's irrepressible Ten, an album of epic proportions, peppered with stadium-friendly hits such as Even Flow, Jeremy and the guitar-gargantuan Alive. Cynics may say that Pearl Jam never matched the musical heights of their debut, but almost two decades on, the group are still with us, easily outlasting their contemporaries Nirvana and Soundgarden. With their eighth studio album, Backspacer, due for an autumn release, this eagerly anticipated live performance at The O2 should see the five-piece showcase some new material, plus delve into their sumptuous back catalogue. For it is live that Pearl Jam really stand alone. One of rock's greatest living arena acts, Vedder and his chums are known for playing each and every show as if it were their last. Sadly, that may soon be the case: the provisional title of Backspacer's last track is The End, perhaps a clue of the band's future intentions. With this in mind, there's no better time to be part of the Jamily and experience the live thrill of Vedder's golden baritone on the front of arguably America's most popular rock and roll band of our times.
