Trent Reznor's industrial metal outfit Nine Inch Nails come to the O2 Arena to hammer home their trademark spectacular live show in celebration of their 20th anniversary. Breaking through at the first Lollapalooza festival in 1991 at the same time as era-defining bands Guns & Roses, Faith No More and the Red Hot Chili Peppers were making ripples, Reznor's NIN, or NIИ as it is often written, are largely credited with bringing industrial music to a mass audience, with David Bowie recently comparing Reznor's "visionary" impact to that of The Velvet Underground. NIN is entirely Reznor, the 44-year-old being responsible for all instruments and vocals when in the studio and hand-picking a band to accompany him on tour. Despite something of a Downward Spiral following the release of the album of that same name in 1999, and Reznor's subsequent foray into anti-governmental conspiracy theories with the Year Zero concept album, NIN released two download-only records to critical acclaim in 2008 and still have no problem pulling in the crowds. But this date at the O2 Arena carries distinct gravitas seeing that it could be Reznor's last ever in London. After 20 years in the game, Reznor has vowed to make NIN "disappear for a while" and this latest Tour has been dubbed "Nine Inch Nails: Wave Goodbye" on the official website, with the dates 1989-2009 portentously daubed underneath.
